Betsy DeVos' nomination for education secretary has stirred quite a bit of controversy. Now, Politico is reporting many Senators have received thousands of phone calls and emails opposing her nomination.
Credo Action, an activist group, told The Hill, "its members made 18,000 calls to members of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee on DeVos, targeting committee Democrats and key Republicans, including Sens. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.)."
Senator Bob Casey (D-Pa.) has reportedly gotten about 50,000 letters and emails voicing concerns about DeVos. Other Senators to also receive similar messages include Senator Bernie Sanders and Senator Kamala Harris.
Politico notes, "Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s office reported hundreds of calls on Tuesday to his Washington and New York offices — largely from parents and current or former teachers."
During her confirmation hearing, she was challenged on numerous occasions and the Washington Post says, "DeVos either displayed a lack of knowledge about education fundamentals or refused to answer questions that Democratic members of the Senate Education Committee believe are critical to her fitness for the job."
In a tweet on Thursday, Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) listed his concerns about DeVos, noting, "Guns in classrooms?  Elementary schools run for profit? No thanks. I will vote NO on Betsy DeVos for Secretary of Education."
While announcing DeVos' nomination back in November, Donald Trump said in a statement, "Betsy DeVos is a brilliant and passionate education advocate...Under her leadership we will reform the US education system and break the bureaucracy that is holding our children back so that we can deliver world-class education and school choice to all families."
