On Monday, the Wall Street Journal revealed that Michael Flynn, the national security adviser to President Trump, became the subject of a US investigation not long ago.
One focus of the effort pertains to phone conversations between Flynn and Russia's ambassador to the US.
The alleged calls, which were initiated by Flynn, occurred on December 29th and were discovered through routine intelligence activities.
Flynn's conversations with Sergey Kislyak have since become a subject of interest to the FBI, the CIA, the Treasury Department, and the National Security Agency, reports Vanity Fair.
According to the Journal, it remains unclear when the inquiry began, if it’s ongoing, and what information has been produced.
Notably, the phone exchanges between Flynn and Kislyak occurred on the same day President Obama announced sanctions against Russia for its alleged interference in the 2016 election.
Commenting on the reported investigation, CNN quotes a Trump spokesman as saying that the White House has "absolutely no knowledge of any investigation or even a basis for such an investigation."
