At her Tuesday hearing, Betsy DeVos, Donald Trump’s pick for secretary of education, agreed that the leaked Trump tape from 2005 where the president-elect can be heard making sexually inappropriate comments about women amounts to sexual assault.
The acknowledgment came in response to a question asked by Sen. Patty Murray, reports The Independent.
Murray said, in part, “I was and I remain very outraged by those comments...If this behavior, kissing and touching women and girls without their consent, happened in a school would you consider it a sexual assault?”
DeVos limited her response to a single word, but it was, “Yes.”
The nominee was far less definitive when asked by Sen. Bob Casey if she would continue to act under Obama administration's guidance that a school’s failure to investigate campus sexual assault allegations amounted to a violation of Title IX, a federal protection against sexual discrimination, notes The Guardian.
DeVos indicated she did not feel a confirmation hearing was the time or place to take a position on the matter, reports CNN.
She did comment, “If confirmed, I look forward to understanding the past actions and current situation better, and to ensuring that the intent of the law is actually carried out in a way that recognizes both the victim...as well as those who are accused.”
