James Clapper, the director of national intelligence, refuted Donald Trump’s suggestion that intelligence agencies were behind the leak of unproven information Russia allegedly has against the president-elect.
Trump first made the implication via Twitter, writing, “Intelligence agencies should never have allowed this fake news to 'leak' into the public. One last shot at me. Are we living in Nazi Germany?"
He expressed a similar sentiment on Wednesday afternoon during a press conference, commenting, “It’s all fake news. It’s phony stuff. It didn’t happen. I think it’s pretty sad when intelligence reports get leaked out to the press,” and described such an act as a, “tremendous blot on their record."
In a statement, Clapper said that he spoke with Trump on Wednesday evening and, “emphasized that this document is not a U.S. Intelligence Community product and that I do not believe the leaks came from within the IC. The IC has not made any judgment that the information in this document is reliable, and we did not rely upon it in any way for our conclusions. However, part of our obligation is to ensure that policymakers are provided with the fullest possible picture of any matters that might affect national security.”
Trump acknowledged that conversation on Thursday morning, tweeting, “James Clapper called me yesterday to denounce the false and fictitious report that was illegally circulated. Made up, phony facts.Too bad!”
