In developing F1 cars, teams traditionally used track testing to understand the performance of new parts - but with the mounting cost of track testing, more focus has switched to wind tunnels. More recently, teams have begun to use supercomputers that run what’s known as “computational fluid dynamics,” or CFD to model the movement of air over the car in the virtual world.
