MMA Community Not Happy With Meryl Streep After Her Golden Globes Speech

Meryl Streep’s Golden Globes speech, which included a comment about mixed martial arts, or MMA, triggered an angry response from fans of the sport.

Meryl Streep’s controversial speech at the recent Golden Globes riled up Donald Trump as well as an unlikely group--the mixed martial arts, or MMA, community.
The New York Times reports that during her acceptance of the Cecil B. DeMille Award, she talked about the diverse backgrounds of several well-known actors like Viola Davis, Natalie Portman, and Ryan Gosling, among others.
Streep then told the audience, “So Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners. And if we kick them all out you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts.”
Fans of MMA had a largely critical reaction to her comment on social media, with one person tweeting, “I'm pretty sure #UFC just sold for twice the amount of Meryl Streep's career box office earnings.”
Another user called her out for hypocrisy, saying, “Meryl Streep said only entertainment w/o liberals are football & MMA. Remember that next time an actor lectures about diversity. #BlackList.”
Meanwhile, others took a gentler approach, like a person who wrote, “As much as I respect Meryl Streep as an artist, MMA is indeed an art. It's dedication and craft, as much as acting, singing or painting.”
Fight promoter Scott Coker also posted a letter on Twitter inviting the actress to an MMA event on January 21.
