Prison fight: Super-max jail fight sends five inmates to hospital

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS — Five inmates were injured during a massive fight at Illinois's Cook County Jail Friday around 1:30 p.m., in the jail's super-max division.

The mayhem began when an inmate standing near the center of the room punched another in the back of the head. Another inmate was then struck, causing his head to bounce off a cement pillar. Out cold, he remained on the floor until someone pulled him away.

Nearly 30 men in the general population room were present, but some clearly didn’t want to be involved and stayed close to the walls.

Guards eventually brought the situation under control with taser guns.

Several weapons were recovered including two that appear to have been made from inhaler parts. Officials are investigating how the inmates got hold of weapons.

Cara Smith, a spokeswoman for the jail, said five inmates were taken to hospital to be treated for their injuries, including stab wounds, but none of the injuries were life-threatening.

Four of the five inmates were in jail on murder charges while the fifth person was charged with armed robbery.
