Israeli court finds sergeant guilt of manslaughter for "execution" of Palestinian

Smiles and applause for 20-year-old Israeli Sergeant Elor Azaria as he entered a military tribunal on Wednesday, but less on the way out as the court found him guilty of manslaughter for an act that put him on the world’s front pages in March last year.

Azaria was filmed during a clash with a knife-wielding Palestinian man in Hebron which left the attacker on the ground incapacitated. Among a group of soldiers arriving on the scene, Azaria gave medical treatment to a wounded Israeli soldier, then walked over to the grounded Palestinian and shot him at point-blank range.

The court will sentence Azaria at a later date. Hundreds of far-right supporters demonstrated outside the court as the verdict was announced.
