UN: Migrant death tolls surpasses 5000 in 2016

In 2016, a record number of people died in the Mediterranean Sea with a total of more than 5,000 people. Around 100 people are still missing and feared to be dead after two boat sank in Italy on Thursday. According to the UN, this is the worst annual death toll ever seen in history of migrants crossing to Europe. It is estimated that approximately 358,403 people had arrived in Europe after making the dangerous journey.
