He wrote, “Someone incorrectly stated that the phrase 'DRAIN THE SWAMP' was no longer being used by me. Actually, we will always be trying to DTS.”
That “someone” was likely Newt Gingrich, a Trump adviser, who said in a recent NPR interview, “I'm told he [Trump] now just disclaims that. He now says it was cute, but he doesn't want to use it anymore."
Gingrich suggested that as Trump is about to take office, "maybe he feels that as president, as the next president of the United States, that he should be marginally more dignified than talking about alligators in swamps ."
“Drain the swamp” quickly became very popular among attendees of Trump rallies, often being yelled with the same enthusiasm given to other favorites, "lock her up" and “build the wall.”
According to the New York Times, despite the swamp chant’s popularity, many remain unsure of what, exactly, it will entail.
