The Obama administration has decided to abolish a previously suspended program which had been accused of targeting Muslims, reports Politico.
On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security issued an action to end the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System, or NSEERS, program which it called “an obsolete special registration program for certain nonimmigrants.”
According to the New York Times, the system was instituted in the wake of the 9/11 attacks and eventually involved additional registration by visitors from about 25 mostly Muslim countries like Syria, Iran, and Iraq.
However, Homeland Security, or DHS, pointed out in a press release that it stopped using the program in 2011 after determining that it was “...redundant, captured data manually that was already captured through automated systems, and no longer provided an increase in security in light of DHS’s evolving assessment of the threat posed to the United States by international terrorism.”
Some observers believe the move, which is reportedly set to take effect on December 23, could be a way to impede Donald Trump’s potential plans to reopen or expand the program, notes Vox.
