Ceremony for slain ambassador Andrei Karlov begins in Moscow

Russia pays tribute to slain ambassador Andrei Karlov.
A funeral service has begun in Moscow for the country’s envoy to Turkey who was killed in Ankara on Monday. Diplomats and family members gathered at the Foreign Ministry to bid their farewells to Karlov. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov laid flowers at the foot of the open-casket.
President Putin is expected to pay his respects later on at the ministry.
Karlov’s name was etched into a slab of pink marble on the wall of the Foreign Ministry along with the names of other top diplomats.
Later on, a service will be held at Moscow’s Christ the Saviour Cathedral, where the head of the Russian Orthodox Church will lead the proceedings.

Turkey’s Foreign Minister announced the street where the Russian embassy is located in Ankara will be renamed after Karlov.
“We made a decision, I was informed by the Turkish Prime Minister about it, to eternalize Mr. Andrei Karlov’s memory in Ankara. I have in mind renaming the street where the Embassy of the Russian Federation is located after Andrei Karlov.”
The ambassador was shot dead as he delivered a speech at a photo exhibition in the Turkish capital.
While both Moscow and Ankara claim the killing won’t threaten relations, differences are emerging over the direction of the investigation.
The Kremlin distanced itself from Turkey’s claim that that followers of Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen were behind the killing.
However, both President Erdogan and President Putin slammed the assassination as a provocation to derail closer ties between Moscow and Ankara, which has seen them work together on Syria, where they back different sides in the conflict.
