An explosion at a fireworks market outside Mexico City has killed at least 27 people and injured around 70 more according to police.

Amateur video showed a flurry of fireworks exploding in all directions and smoke billowing from fires.

The blast hit the San Pablito market in Tultepec, which lies about 32 km from the Mexican capital.

As rescue workers secured the site, the head of Tultepec’s emergency services said the death toll was preliminary.

It’s not yet known what caused the fireworks to ignite.

It is the second time a blast has struck the popular market. In September 2005 there was another explosion just before independence day celebrations which caused many injuries.
