AIB(The All India Bakchod) are probably the most talked about people right now. The AIB comprises of Gursimran Khamba, Tanmay Bhat, Rohan Joshi and Ashish Shakya. The stand-up comedians who perform quite regularly at the Canvas Laugh Factory (previously known as The Comedy Store) co-founded AIB which is a Youtube channel and their videos are a collective of India’s edgiest comedy. They were previously known for populating videos such as Alia Bhatt’s Genius Of The Year, Tribute Of The Indian Ads, Thank You Congress and a few other satires on the most spoken about subjects and controversial topics in India. They spoofed a lot of movies, celebrities, politicians and some other public figures. While most Indians know about the Hollywood celebrity ‘roasts’ only of the Comedy Central, it was for the first time that Indian comedy circuits decided to ‘roast’ Indian celebrities namely, Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor. A ‘Roast’ is nothing but a group of comedians coming together and making fun of and joking about a ‘celebrity’. The ‘roast’ is intended to be insulting and demeaning, but it is only done with the consent of the celebrity and the other participants.
Talking about the ‘AIB Roast of Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh’, the actual event took place on 20th December 2014 at NSCI Stadium, Worli Mumbai, but they released the video on 28th January 2015 across all social media platforms. It is safe to say that they ‘broke the internet’ that day as everyone was hooked onto the video. The other panelists or the ‘roasters’ included Karan Johar, Raghu Ram, Aditi Mittal, Abish Matthew, Rajeev Masand. While the video touched million views in a day, what followed later was totally unexpected. The AIB was totally ruthless in ‘roasting’ Arjun and Ranveer and the jokes were based right from their sexual escapades to toilet humour, their educational and family backgrounds as well. The host of the show was Karan Johar and the usually calm and suave KJO was a part of the explicit insult mongering as well. Deepika Padukone, Anurag Kashyap, Sonakshi Sinha and Alia Bhatt who were present at the event also became the targets of the comedians. The comedians left no stones unturned in insulting Deepika on her dating life, Anurag on his broken marriage with Kalki Koechlin, Sonakshi on her weight issues and Alia on her intelligence. Karan Johar became a target of ‘homosexual’ jokes but he was sporty enough to joke on it himself. The jokes were extremely nasty and politically incorrect but poor Arjun and Ranveer couldn’t do much other than sit and grin themselves.
This kind of humour however, did not go down well with the morally policed Indian audiences as they aren’t comfortable with expletives being used too casually, especially in movies or television shows. Soon after the moral police brigade took offense of the video and a PIL was filed against the AIB team. People also slammed Ranveer Singh was allegedly kissing a fan, Karan Johar and his rumoured girlfriend Deepika Padukone in full view of the public. A regional political party also demanded a public apology from the AIB, as well as a religious group who felt their religious sentiments were deeply hurt by some of the jokes. Several people also found jokes on dark skinned people, homosexuals and women as extremely derogatory and demanded the video be taken off the social media platforms. Controversial actor, Kamaal R Khan popularly known as KRK also posted his review of the roast on his Youtube channel and slammed Deepika and Sonakshi for finding his tweets to be offensive, but approving of the jokes being cracked on their weight and dating life at the AIB roast. The AIB team soon bowed down, apologized and the roast video was taken off. While most of the Bollywood celebs kept mum on the controversy, Aamir Khan surprised everyone by slamming the AIB. Aamir found the video to be extremely distasteful and violent. He further added that he does not find abusing funny and he scolded Arjun and Karan for being a part of it. However, his wife Kiran Rao had a different take altogether as she genuinely found the AIB roast funny and even advocated that they have a full right to make such videos as it is their freedom of speech. The AIB may have found their share of fans and detractors, but people started tweeting about Aamir’s views as well. It is now rumoured that Arvind Kejriwal, Indian politician, social activist and founder of the Aam Aadmi Party has also voiced out his opinion in favour of the AIB roast video.
