Cardell Hayes, 29, was officially convicted of manslaughter on Sunday for his involvement in the death of former New Orleans Saints' player Will Smith. Smith was shot and killed by Hayes on April 9th after the two got into an altercation following a minor traffic accident. Hayes testified that he shot Smith in self-defense, fearing that Smith had a gun and was going to shoot him first. Smith was determined to be legally drunk at the time of the incident. Smith, a former Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion with the Saints, was in the car with three other people returning from the French Quarter Festival when the accident occurred.
