Playing in only five theaters, the lively and well-reviewed “La La Land” grossed a staggering $855,000 for Lionsgate, according to studio estimates Sunday. In just one week, “La La Land” has the highest per-location average of all time for a five-theater release and the second-highest per location average ever, according to the studio. “Audiences love it and the critical response has been fantastic.” David Spitz, Lionsgate’s distribution chief said. The film, which is an ode to classic Hollywood song-and-dance pictures Stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, expands to 200 locations next week.
