Rio 2016 Paralympics Day 2 Highlights

Day 2 saw some impressive entrances,

emotional celebrations

and lots of drama…

in the velodrome…

and in the pool.

29 world records were set, bringing the grand total to 58.

Here are some of the top stories

Super Friday was fast, long and high
Ireland’s Jason Smyth kept his title in the 100m T12,
as did Great Britain’s Jonnie Peacock in the 100m T44.
France’s Marie Amelie Le Fur set a new world record in long jump … twice
And let’s not forget the crowd favourite – men’s high jump T42.
India’s Mariyappan Thangavelu jumped 1.89m to take gold.



China were fast in the pool… really fast.

Maodang Song - men’s 100m butterfly S8 (59.19)
Qing Xu - men’s 50m butterfly S6 (29.89)
Liankang Zou men’s 100m backstroke S2 (1:45.25)
Mixed 4x50m freestyle relay 20 points (2:18.03)

Uzbekistan’s Ramil Gasimov had some impressive moves in Judo

He won gold with a direct ippon from an expertly-executed throw.


Cape Verde won their first ever Paralympic medal

The country’s President rang Gracelino Barbosa to congratulate him on bronze in the men’s 400m T20

Iran’s Sareh Javanmardidodmani made history…

by becoming her country’s first ever female gold medallist in shooting
She wonthe P2 (women’s 10m air pistol SH1) event.

Finally, in the medals table, Ukraine has moved up into the top 5…
