Mexico's President Enrique Peña Nieto signed a mandate protecting nearly 160 million acres for environmental conservation. Peña Neito created four new biological reserves and five other protected areas. This is the largest amount of land the country has ever decreed as environmentally protected, according to a statement from Mexico's government. Nearly 23 percent of Mexico's sea surface as protected, the statement said. Pena Nieto signed the decrees while a U.N. Biodiversity Conference was being held in Cancun.
