Cuba bans naming monuments after Fidel Castro
  • 7 years ago
Cuban President Raul Castro announced the government is prohibiting the naming of streets and monuments after his late brother Fidel Castro. The government is also barring construction of Fidel Castro statues. This mandate comes on behalf of the former leader's desire to avoid creating a "cult of personality," according to Raul Castro. "The leader of the revolution rejected any manifestation of a cult of personality and was consistent in that through the last hours of his life," Raul Castro said. Fidel Castro, who stepped down from power in 2006 after falling sick, kept his name off public sites during his time as both prime minister and president.
