China’s first astronaut, Yang Liwei, claims to have heard unexplained knocking sounds while in space, reports the BBC.
The flight occurred in 2003, but he recently recounted the experience to Chinese media.
A local news source quotes Liwei as saying, “A non-causal situation I have met in space is a knock that appeared from time to time.”
He also reportedly stated, “It neither came from outside nor inside the spaceship, but sounded like someone is knocking the body of the spaceship just as knocking an iron bucket with a wooden hammer.”
He says he tried to find the cause of the noise but could not.
Liwei has since warned subsequent astronauts who have also reportedly heard the strange sound.
The BBC consulted with Goh Cher Hiang and Wee-Seng Sohwith, space experts at the National University of Singapore, about the mystery. According to Hiang, it could be an object knocking into the spacecraft, however, Sohwith believes that it could be the vehicle simply expanding or contracting.
