FIM Speedway Championships

Imagine riding a 500cc bike with no brakes, no gears and no fear at over 120km/h, with acceleration faster than a Formula 1 car. Welcome to the world of Speedway. Not only is it one of the fastest growing motor sports in the world but also one of the most exciting for spectators and TV viewers to follow. In an arena with oval dirt tracks, four riders race anticlockwise over four laps in a heat that lasts approximately one minute.

The FIM Speedway World Championships are an international competition between the highest ranked motorcycle speedway riders in the world and formed from the FIM Speedway Grand Prix (individual riders) and the FIM Speedway World Cup (national teams).

16 riders take part in each Grand Prix event and over the course of 23 heats each rider races against every other rider once. The top eight scorers advance to a semi final and from each semi final the 1st and 2nd placed riders will advance to the GP final where the winner is determined. Points are awarded by placement in each event and are tallied up at the end of each season.

The 2013 FIM Speedway Grand Prix has 12 events throughout, as well as four Speedway World Cup meetings. The sensational season opening returns to the Southern Hemisphere for the second year running. Auckland’s Western Springs Stadium will kick off the Speedway calendar on the 23rd March playing host to the world’s best riders and will enable spectators to catch a glimpse of the exciting season to come.
