Synopsis : Jhansi Ki Rani was the first film in technicolor to be made in India. It was a joint project between India and the US. The full length film is 159 minutes while the Indian Nupor DVD is 129 minutes (about 134 minutes at film speed). The Indian Nupor DVD is in black and white and the film made from the Nupor DVD is available for viewing here on YouTube. The version made for US release is 96 minutes long and the DVD of it is in color. This is the American version, sometimes called The Tiger And The Flame. Apparently there were two filmings done at the same time, one in Hindi for Indian distribution and the other in (mostly) English for the US market. This is in English.
Jhansi Ki Rani was one of the few India-produced films to enjoy distribution in the US (courtesy of United Artists). Producer-director Sohrab M. Modi also plays the sizeable role of Rajguru, the advisor to 19th century Indian queen Rani Lakshmibai (Mehtab). Upon her arranged marriage to the much-older Raja (Mubarak), the queen takes a crash course in diplomacy, military strategy, and self-defense. She applies the lessons learned by spearheading a revolt against the monopolistic East Indian Tea Company and, ultimately, the British Empire itself.
