The Saint Lawrence church in Weesp, Netherlands, caught fire on the evening of November 8. It is not yet known what caused the fire, but local news outlet Weesper News reported it was likely started by a short circuit, as construction on the church was underway earlier in the day.The fire is now under control, but crews had a difficult time battling the blaze as the flames erupted at the top of the church, near the spire, and were too high for firefighters to reach, resulting in the flame spreading downward, reported Nos, who added that firefighters were also weary the building may collapse.
Homes and businesses nearby the church, located on the Herengracht canal, were evacuated as a precaution.
