Dan Rather has compared the current election to “a dumpster fire.”

The former anchor of CBS news made this comment on Monday during an appearance on the CNN program New Day.

One of the hosts, Alisyn Camerota, began the interview by noting that he has covered around 16 previous presidential elections before asking him his thoughts on the current one.

Rather responded by saying, “Well, there’s never been one like this.  Every presidential election is unique unto itself and important, but we’ve never in the history of the country, not just in my lifetime, we’ve never in the history of the country had an election campaign like this.”

He went on to explain, “We've never had a campaign in which both candidates had negatives above 50 percent.  Unprecedented.  Also, I would say that the rules of civility, while they certainly have been broken many times in the past, never with the consistency they have.”

Rather continued by stating, “This has been sort of a dumpster fire of an election campaign, in which both sides, and I'm not giving false equivalency here, one side more than the other--racism, chauvinism, some jingoism, just name it.  It's been so down and dirty.”

He then conceded, “We’ve had tough races before but never at a level this low.”
