Edvard Grieg is Norway’s most renowned composer. While not the first significant composer of his country, he filled its musical paradigms, which were purely Germanic models, with a distinctive national spirit. The small cantata At the Cloister Gate depicts only a few lines of the epic poem Arnljot Gelline by Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson in which its heroine flees to seek refuge in a southern convent from the man who killed his father and tries to claim her in marriage.
Edvard Grieg es el compositor más famoso de Noruega. Si bien no fue el primer compositor significativo de su patria, fue él quien llenó sus paradigmas musicales, otrora basados en modelos germánicos puros, de un espíritu nacional y distintivo. La pequeña cantata En la Puerta del Claustro describe apenas algunas líneas del poema épico de Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson en el que la heroína escapa a un convento del sur para refugiarse del hombre que mató a su padre y quien prentende desposarla.
