The Clinton Foundation had allegedly been under scrutiny by some FBI agents for possibly giving preferential political treatment to donors, reports the Washington Post.
As the article states, “Agents in New York wanted to examine allegations of corruption and conflicts of interest that have swirled around the charitable organization of the Clinton family.”
However, the Justice Department ultimately found insufficient grounds to proceed, and FBI agents are not believed to have ever contacted the foundation for formal questioning.
A recent Wall Street Journal piece discusses what it calls the bureau’s “sharp internal disagreement over matters related to the Clintons, and how to handle those matters fairly and carefully in the middle of a national election campaign.”
According to the Journal, investigators began looking into potentially illegal or ethically questionable behavior by the foundation over a year ago, but insiders were split on whether it was a worthwhile pursuit.
Bureau officials reportedly presented their case to the Justice Department in February with the response ranging from unconvinced to “icy and dismissive.”
As the Washington Post points out, “It is unclear what, if any, evidence they had to substantiate those allegations.”
