Widespread protests have taken place in several cities across Morocco after a fishmonger was reportedly crushed to death trying to retrieve fish confiscated by police.

Officers took the fish Mouhcine Fikri had bought and threw it into a garbage truck. The 31-year-old is said to have died after diving in to retrieve it.

He was reportedly in possession of 500 kg of swordfish, sales of which are banned at this time of year.

The incident in the northern town of Al-Hoceima sparked a level of outrage rarely seen in Morocco, where King Mohamed is still the most influential figure.

Currently on a tour of Africa, the king has ordered the interior minister to present royal condolences to the family. Both the interior and justice ministries have promised an investigation into Fikri’s death.
