Some 900 people have fled the Iraqi city of Mosul and crossed the border into Syria, the UN refugee agency says.
Residents of Mosul said Islamic State was using civilians as human shields as Kurdish and Iraqi forces captured outlying villages in their advance on the jihadists' stronghold.
ISIS said on Monday its fighters had targeted the attacking forces with 10 suicide bombs and that their foes had surrounded five villages but not taken them.
