A controversial Arizona sheriff is set to be charged over his treatment of suspected undocumented immigrants.
According to The Arizona Republic, Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County is being accused of “criminal contempt... for violating a federal court’s orders in a racial-profiling case.”
The case reportedly involves the claim that his officers continued to question Hispanic individuals despite a prior ruling prohibiting the practice.
Arpaio is known for his aggressive policies, even calling himself the “toughest sheriff in America.”
He has attracted public attention by housing inmates in a place called Tent City and requiring them to wear pink undergarments, notes BuzzFeed News.
A U.S. district judge is expected to sign off on the charge against Arpaio pending additional paperwork.
Should he be convicted, the sheriff faces a maximum jail sentence of six months.
CBS News reports that the forthcoming legal action was made public just one day before voters are allowed to begin voting early in the race where Arpaio is hoping to be re-elected.
