Support for #IndigenousPeoplesDay grows across North America on Columbus Day
  • 8 years ago
Columbus Day has become a more criticized federal holiday year after year.
The cities of Phoenix and Denver will celebrate their first official Indigenous Peoples Day on Monday as part of a growing movement to acknowledge Indigenous Peoples Day, in recognition of the suffering Native American people endured during American colonization.
The changes build on recent efforts to shift the day's focus from the Italian explorer, beginning in big cities including Seattle, Minneapolis and Albuquerque, and spreading to counties and school districts.
Since Columbus Day 2015, at least 14 communities in the United States have passed measures designating the second Monday in October Indigenous Peoples Day.
