Jón Leifs (1899-1968) was and has been the most prominent composer of Iceland. His musical vision of nationalism blended perfectly with modern musical trends. The Saga Symphony was composed during the toughest time of his life: Nearly a hostage of the Nazis while keeping his Jewish wife and girls in secret, Leifs needed a source of escape and began reading Icelandic sagas, which eventually inspired him to write the present symphony; piece for he employed an orchestra that requires, for the first time in his output, exotic instruments as anvils, shields and Icelandic lurs (horns).
Jón Leifs (1899-1968) fue y es aún el compositor más prominente de Islandia. Su visión musical del nacionalismo iba perfectamente de la mano con el modernismo. La Sinfonía de Sagas fue compuesta en el momento más duro de su vida: siendo casi rehén de los nazis mientras mantenía a su esposa e hija judías en secreto, Leifs necesitaba una fuente de escape y comenzó a leer sagas islandesas, las cuales le inspiraron la presente sinfonía; misma fue escrita para una orquesta que requiere, por vez primera en sus obras, instrumentos exóticos como yunques, escudos y lurs (cornos) islandeses.
