Matthew heads for Florida as authorities call on residents to leave

Hurricane Matthew has picked up strength and is heading for Florida.
Matthew, with wind speeds of 205km/h, is expected to smash into southern Florida as a Category Four storm.

Authorities have placed evacuation orders along the coast.
Governor Rick Scott addressed residents: “If you’re watching and you live in an evacuation zone you need to leave now and get to a safe zone. If you’re watching in your evacuation area get out. Don’t take a chance. Time is running out. This is clearly going to either have a direct hit or come right along our coast and we’re going to have hurricane force winds.”

The evacuation is underway and vehicles have began queuing at petrol stations.
A state of emergency has been declared in four states and federal assistance is being made avaliable.
The storm passed over Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, where flights and maritime transport have been halted.
In Haiti at least 140 people have lost their lives after Matthew battered impoverished Haiti.

In the neighbouring Dominican Republic four people have been killed.
