JEJU, SOUTH KOREA — A Chinese man was arrested on Saturday for allegedly killing an elderly Korean woman in a chapel on the South Korean resort island of Jeju . This incident comes after eight Chinese tourists were arrested on the same island earlier this month for beating up a restaurateur.”

The killing has prompted more than 11,000 people to sign an online petition to repeal the visa-free entry afforded to Chinese tourists, which was implemented in 2008 to boost local tourism.

Korean media report that the suspect, identified only by his surname, Chen, visited a chapel to repent his sins. It is believed the man entered and saw a 61-year-old Korean woman who reminded him of an ex-wife who had left him for another man.

Apparently unable to control his anger, he stabbed the woman four times in the chest and abdomen before fleeing.

The woman was able to make an emergency call before she lost consciousness. She passed away the next day at a hospital.

According to the Korean Times, about 70 percent of the crimes committed by foreigners on Jeju Island was done by Chinese tourists until July this year.
