Austria: driver who ran over crowds 'thought he was being chased'

A man accused of driving his car into a crowd of pedestrians in Austria has gone on trial in the town of Graz.

Three people were killed and more than 100 injured when the driver ran amok in his SUV along several streets.

The 27-year-old told the court he didn’t want to run anyone over, he thought he was being chased and about to be shot and wanted to get away.

Prosecutors are not pushing for murder charges and want him sent to a mental institution, following psychiatrists’ assessments.

The trial is expected to last for 10 days.
