UN General Assembly on refugees and migrants

The United Nations’ 71st General Assembly, underway in New York, is the first summit on refugees and migrants. A concrete plan is expected to emerge to help deal with the crisis including how leaders are going to implement The New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants.
Chinese Premiere Li Keqiang said that China plans to provide an additional $100 million in assistance.

In what will probably be his last UN conference, Ban Ki-Moon told the summit: “Refugees and migrants are not to be seen as a burden. They offer great potential if only we unlock it.”

Amnesty International’s Secretary General Salil Shetty was sceptical of the summit, he said: “Instead of sharing responsibility, world leaders shirked it. The UN summit has been sabotaged by states acting in self-interest, leaving millions of refugees in dire situations around the world on the edge of a precipice.”
