According to a White House official, the number of refugees accepted into the U.S. will increase to a minimum of 110,000 in the coming year.

According to a White House official, the number of refugees accepted into the U.S. will increase to a minimum of 110,000 in the coming year, reports CNN. 
That figure is a 57% greater than the 2015 allotment and in line with the administration’s previously stated goal to come to the aid of more people in need. 
According to the Wall Street Journal, Secretary of State John Kerry informed Congress of the plan on Tuesday but has been speaking publicly about such an expansion for some time. 
Whether or not the U.S. should welcome those fleeing troubled areas such as Syria has been a hotly contested issue during the presidential campaign. 
Donald Trump proposed that Muslims should be temporarily banned from entering the United States, while Hillary Clinton has promoted offering greater opportunities for refuge to people from Syria.
