Texas opened their year upsetting Notre Dame 50-47 at home in overtime. They followed up that win a home win to UTEP by the score of 41-7 as a -31 point favorite. The total went under 58 points. Longhorns defense was good by limiting the Miners to 208 yards with 73 through the air. UTEP converted only 3 of 15 on third down. Longhorns Freshmen quarterback Steve Buechele completed 22 of 27 passes for 244 yards and four touchdowns. Texas averaged 3.6 yards per carry on the ground on 47 rushes.

California opened the year in Australia and defeated Hawaii 51-31. They then traveled to San Diego St and were defeated 45-40 but covered the spread of +5 ½ points. The total went over 59 ½ points. Cal’s defense was crushed on the ground as the Aztecs ran for 335 yards for 7.3 yards a carry. Much of the Golden Bears offense came through the air as quarterback Davis Webb completed 41 of 72 throws for 522 yards and five touchdowns but three picks.
