A 9/11 memorial setup by students of the Occidental College in Los Angeles, California was repeatedly vandalized on Sunday.
According to a Facebook post by the Occidental College Republican Club, 2,997 American flags were planted as part of the memorial.
The post notes, "...vandals crushed, snapped, and threw in the garbage every single flag. Not one was left in the ground. Not only did they destroy the memorial, they put posters and flyers up that shamed the victims of 9/11."
The group replanted those flags but the vandalism attempts reportedly continued.
The Facebook post adds, "Later...a few of us stood guard at the memorial. Four Occidental students came up and snapped a few flags right in our faces. When we confronted them, those cowards got away as fast as they possibly could."
Occidental College has issued a statement noting that they are investigating the incident and will take disciplinary action against those deemed responsible.
