The town of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, is reeling after its police chief Mike De Nardo has died from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.
According to the Chicago Tribune, the tragedy occurred outside the Bay St. Louis Police Department on Thursday right after De Nardo had reportedly been suspended from his job.
Mayor Les Fillingame has been quoted as saying, “There was some evidence presented that caused us, at the request of the sheriff's department, to suspend Mike for the term of the investigation. But we really felt like, from the initial conversation with Mike, that (the issue) would be resolved.”
No further explanation about the suspension has been given, notes the Sun Herald.
According to the department’s website, De Nardo had worked in law enforcement for 30 years, joining the Bay St. Louis Police Department in 2004 and ascending to Chief of Police in 2010.
