Fox News personality Geraldo Rivera has publicly apologized for defending the network’s ex-CEO Roger Ailes against sexual harassment claims initially made by former anchor Gretchen Carlson, reports NBC News.
Rivera posted about the controversy on Thursday in a long Facebook message he titled “Roger and Me.”
In it, he writes, “I was totally blindsided by his sexual harassment scandal, which is why I responded to Gretchen Carlson’s initial filing of her lawsuit with extreme skepticism. The man she described in her pleadings was unknown even to those of us who thought we knew him well.”
After recounting his long professional history with Ailes, Rivera explains that he spoke out in support of his boss even after the allegations deepened because of loyalty.
Rivera goes on to say, “Now I am filled with regret for stubbornly discounting their various allegations….Moreover, I apologize for my skepticism. Like victims of sexual assault, those alleging harassment deserve the presumption of credibility.”
