The San Diego Chargers are off to the road to open the 2016 campaign as they meet the Kansas City Chiefs in an NFL pro football game set for Sunday.

Notes: Kansas City swept the two meetings with San Diego in 2015. The team held in KC was won by the Chiefs 10-3 as a +11 ½ point underdog. The Chargers slipped to last place in the AFC West a season ago. Phillip Rivers returns under center. He comes off a year where the completed 66% of his throws for 4792 yards with 29 touchdowns and 13 picks. His running backs are Melvin Gordon along with Danny Whitehead. In the passing game are wide outs Keenan Allen and Travis Benjamin along with tight end Antonio Gates. San Diego possessed the 20th ranked defense in the league as the team allowed 361 yards per game with 4.8 yards per carry allowed on the ground.

Kansas City was a wildcard entrant in the playoffs last year. They crushed the Houston Texans in the AFC Wildcard round 30-0 but then were defeated the following week in the divisional round at New England 27-20 as a +6 point underdog. Alex Smith returns under center and comes off a season where he completed 65.3% of his passes for 3486 yards with 20 touchdowns and seven picks. The running back situation is experienced behind Jamaal Charles and Knile Davis. Jeremy Maclin is the main man in the passing game. KC was only the 27th ranked offense from the NFL as the team gained 331 yards per game. Their passing offense generated only 203 yards per contest.
