U.S Paid Iran An Additional $1.3 Billion In Cash

The Obama administration had admitted to sending $400 million in cash to Iran; now officials with U.S. State, Treasury and Justice departments have revealed that a $1.3 billion hard-currency payment was also made to that country.

The Obama administration had admitted to sending $400 million in cash to Iran; now, the U.S. Treasury has revealed that an additional $1.3 billion hard-currency payment was also made to that country.

A Wall Street Journal report states that, “The cash payments—made in Swiss francs, euros and other currencies—settled a decades-old dispute over a failed arms deal dating back to 1979.”

Officials have said that other forms of money transfer were not available because sanctions had excluded Iran from the traditional banking system.

As such, the administration reportedly told lawmakers in a briefing that planes carrying the cash flew via Europe on January 22nd and February 5th.

This news has caused additional conflict with Republicans in Congress who were already unhappy with the initial payment that was made.

Many of them believe the White House paid the equivalent of ransom since the timing was used to secure the release of American prisoners in Iran.

However, Obama has denied the claim, and his team has explained that the larger remaining sum was handed over to prevent a potentially costlier loss in arbitration over interest payments.
