Obama’s Asia trip drama: bad luck and worse manners
  • 8 years ago
Barack Obama's final trip to Asia as president was tarnished by bad luck and worse manners.
On Tuesday, the US president canceled a meeting with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte in Laos after the new leader called Obama a "son of a b*tch" and threatened to swear at him in their planned reunion if he dared ask him about the recent extrajudicial killings in his country.
Hillary Clinton said Mr. Obama’s decision to cancel the meeting was “exactly the right choice.”
Obama's "bad luck" started with his arrival at the airport in China on Saturday, where Chinese officials failed to provide a portable staircase for him to disembark from the upper door of Air Force One and instead he emerged from a smaller metal staircase from a secondary exit at the back of the plane.
Many saw this as a deliberate sign of disrespect by the Chinese although the White House officials attributed the dispute to inexperienced security officials.
But GOP nominee Donald Trump, said he would have refused to meet with Chinese officials if they treated him in such a manner... "It's a sign of such disrespect" he expressed.
