Chicago reached an unsettling milestone over Labor Day weekend; the city recorded its 500th homicide for 2016.
The Chicago Tribune is reporting that 13 people were fatally shot, with 9 of the killings and much of the violence occurring “between 6 a.m. Monday and 3 a.m. Tuesday.”
The holiday followed a particularly violent month for Chicago, with 90 murders during the month of August alone.
While CNN points out that other metro areas like New Orleans and Detroit have higher homicide rates on a per capita basis, Chicago's homicide rate far exceeds that of New York and Los Angeles.
In fact, according to the Chicago Tribune, these two cities combined tallied nearly 100 fewer murders than Chicago this year through the end of August.
Law enforcement has attributed the surge, in part, to illegal guns as well as repeat offenders with possible gang ties, notes the Washington Post.
Meanwhile, others cite broader problems like poor relations with the police and economic challenges.
