Earthquake in central Italy killed at least 247 people

The earthquake that struck central Italy on Wednesday has killed at least 247 people, doubling the count of the previous evening. The Civil Protection department in Rome said a tally by officials showed that 190 people were killed in Rieti province and 57 in the province of Ascoli Piceno. Amid scenes of carnage, dozens of emergency services staff and volunteers were determined to attempt to pluck more survivors from the ruins.
