Italian rescue workers pulled out a man from beneath the rubble of his family's home in Accumoli almost nine hours after an earthquake on Wednesday (August 24).

As 65-year-old Luciano Peri was pulled out, his sister Patrizia watched the rescue anxiously. Still wearing her pyjamas and slippers, she cried and embraced her brother as he was put in an ambulance. Peri was conscious and moving his right hand.

"Where is she, where is she?" he murmured while on the stretcher.

"I'm here, I'm not leaving you" Patrizia told her brother, after rescue workers gave themselves a brief round of applause for pulling Luciano out alive.

The powerful earthquake devastated a string of mountainous towns in central Italy, trapping residents under piles of rubble, killing at least 38 people and leaving thousands homeless.
