On Thursday, Daniel Harris, a 29-year-old man unarmed and unable to hear or speak, was reportedly killed by a North Carolina state trooper over a speeding incident.
According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Trooper Jermaine Saunders attempted to pull the deaf man over near a Charlotte exit, but he continued to drive, notes WCCB.
With the siren on, Saunders followed the vehicle until it came to a stop outside a home.
Harris exited the car, and it is believed he attempted to communicate with the authority using sign language, according to the New York Daily News.
A neighbor allegedly heard the trooper demand that Harris stop moving.
That command was reportedly followed by a gunshot.
The victim’s family has set up an online fundraising campaign to help with funeral costs. Remaining donations will be used to establish a foundation devoted to educating authorities on how to recognize and confront deaf individuals.
