Alexander Tcherepnin belonged to the Russian diaspora following the Revolution of 1917 and carried out his musical education in Moscow, Tbilisi and Paris, absorbing romanticism, folklorism and modernism as his musical influences. During his middle period, he experimented with modernism applied to folk music and travelled far and wide between China and Japan from 1934 to 1937. The Third Symphony had a difficult genesis: it was to be conceived as a dog themed symphony, yet the project was abandoned and Tcherepnin used recycled material from ballets, and created a study over Chinese-oriented pentatonics with a far-from-conventional structure.
Alexander Tcherepnin perteneció a la diáspora rusa que siguió a la revolución de 1917y desarrolló su educación musical en Moscú, Tiflis y París, absorbiendo el romanticismo, el folclorismo y el modernismo como sus influencias musicales. Durante su periodo intermedio, experimentó con modernismo aplicado a la música folclórica y viajó a lo largo y ancho entre China y Japón de 1934 a 1937. Su tercera sinfonía tuvo un origen escabroso: ésta iba a ser originalmente una sinfonía sobre la historia de los perros, pero el proyecto fue abandonado y Tcherepnin usó material reciclado de sus ballets, convirtiéndolo en un estudio sobre las escalas pentatónicas chinas con una estructura poco convencional.
