Hugo Alfven is traditionally seen as the “national” composer in and out of Sweden. Sadly, his name is mostly remembered today thanks to his Swedish Rhapsody No. 1 “Midsommarvaka”. However, he composed in many genres ranging from symphonies to ballet and cantatas. One of these is “At the turn of the century”, a celebration cantata for the 1900 New Year Concert in Stockholm. In spite of its apparent simplicity, this work contains extremely virtuosic passages for soprano solo.
Hugo Alfven es visto tradicionalmente como el compositor “nacional” dentro y fuera de Suecia. Tristemente, su fama radica hoy en día únicamente por su Rapsodia Sueca No. 1 “Midsommarvaka”. No obstante, compuso para varios géneros yendo de la sinfonía al ballet y a las cantatas. Una de ellas es “Al cambiar de siglo”, una cantata festiva para el concierto del Año Nuevo 1900 en Estocolmo. A pesar de su aparente simpleza, la obra contiene pasajes ultra-virtuosos en el solo de soprano.
