A team of treasure hunters has begun digging at a site near Walbrzych, Poland, where local legends suggest a Nazi-era train carrying looted gold was buried at the end of World War II. Preparations for the dig, led by Poland’s Piotr Koper and Germany’s Andreas Richter, began on August 12, and excavators began digging at the woodland site around 270 miles southwest of Warsaw on Tuesday. The German and Polish team of treasure hunters claimed that the location of the train had been confirmed by ground-scanning radar despite doubts about the claims from academics and local officials. Polskie Radio reported Polish government and railway officials approved the dig despite the lack of concrete evidence over the existence of the train.
